Artists Statement
I am an interdisciplinary fine artist specializing in drawing, traditional hand pulled prints and painting.
I am trained as a geologist and as a fine arts artist. Both these disciplines instilled a love of the outdoors. My science background and love of nature influence much of the work I do today, desiring not to just depict a subject but to narrate its story.
What I do
Nature is a common thread in my work, as are themes of beauty, joy or whimsy. I’m captivated by subjects as large as a rocky coast or as small as the way a leaf curls when it falls to the ground. I want my work to bring joy to the viewer.
White Line Woodcuts
An American Art Form
I have carved and printed more than 50 white line woodcuts. I love this truly American art form, also known as Provincetown Printmaking. A large print can take hundreds of hours. Each print is an original, being repainted every time a new print is pulled. The variations from print to print are part of the beauty of the process.
Mokuhanga Prints
Traditional Japanese Printmaking
Mokuhanga is traditional Japanese printmaking using water based inks, allowing for a completely different aesthetic than white line woodcuts. Each one is made completely by hand and is an original. I'm excited to bring this printmaking technique into my practice.
Drawing and Painting
The Foundation for Everything I do
Utilizing more than one genre comes naturally for me as a graphic artist, and while they seem to be a departure from one act to another, good drawing skills unite them all.
The ability to draw well has been lifelong pursuit, and is core to my artistic practice.
